1649, post-Civil War England. Gerrard Winstanley, ex-soldier and ruined cloth merchant, leads a group of poor men and women, the Diggers, to claim St George's Hill in Surrey as common land and establish a settlement living as equals. But the local villagers see the Diggers as a threat to their livelihood and led by a Presbyterian parson, take action to harass and burn them out.
